Holiday shipping 2022
Thu 1 Dec 2022 - Filed under: Not a Journal., free shipping, holiday, shipping| Posted by: Gavin
Here’s my annual reminder that holiday mail dates are coming up fast. Our office will be closed as usual from December 21 – January 2, 2023. (Of course, Weightless is always open.)
Media mail shipping is free. However, as per our usual warnings, the USPS doesn’t even give a last mailing date for media mail packages as they’re the last ones put on a truck. If the truck’s full, the media mail packages are put aside for the next one. And so on. If it’s really busy, those packages may arrive after the holidays. If you don’t care, yay! If you want to guarantee pre-holiday arrival, please choose Priority Mail.
Here are the last order dates for Small Beer Press—which are not the same as everyone else, see note about the office being closed above.

First-Class Mail® Service | Dec. 17 |

Happy holidays! Hope you get to rest and read a good book or two.
Holiday Deadlines 2021
Wed 3 Nov 2021 - Filed under: Not a Journal., holiday, housekeeping, shipping, shipping news, usps| Posted by: Gavin
Time for our annual posting of the USPS Holiday Shipping Deadlines.
I usually post these later but you may have seen in the news that all the manufacturers are expecting holiday shipping to be slow, more expensive, and unreliable this year. So far our experience at Book Moon has proven that to be correct. If you can order early for the holidays, go for it!
As usual, the Small Beer office will be closed from December 23, 2021 – January 3, 2022. However, we can still get books to you because what we most want to do, book-wise, is get books to readers:
- Weightless Books is always there, 100% solid, 100% independent with DRM-free ebooks in the format of your choice. They can also be sent as gifts on the date you specify.
- How about just any about old ebook in any genre? Got them here.
- Audiobooks: we have them. (I love Libro.fm — it’s very simple to use and they have pretty much everything.)
- Bookshop can ship books and toys to you or direct to your family and friends. We’re always adding book recs there.
- Book Moon will be open.
So here are the last (domestic) order dates for Small Beer Press. (International.) Along with a reminder that orders include free first class (LCRW) or media mail (books) shipping in the USA.
And this year this annual reminder should probably just be bolded:
Media Mail parcels are the last ones to go on trucks. If the truck is full, Media Mail does not go out until the next truck. And if that one’s full, too . . . it could be very late in December before there’s space. So, if you’d like to guarantee pre-holiday arrival, please add Priority Mail:
Domestic Mail Class/Product | Deadline |
---|---|
Media Mail (estimate, not guaranteed) | Dec. 5 |
First Class Mail (LCRW/chapbooks) | Dec. 17 |
Priority Mail | Dec. 18 |
Priority Mail Express | Dec. 23 |
Here are the books we published this year:
Shipping delays

We are hearing from our faithful and hard working distributor, Consortium, that their warehouses have been closed on and off all this week due to the winter weather — never mind the whole pandemic thing and the intentional destruction carried out on the USPS — so please, go ahead, order all our books but please do be patient with all those indie bookstores trying to send you your books. Thank you!
Need a lift? Have you seen this tiny video of Hugh Jackman recommend Claire G. Coleman’s Terra Nullius? Woah!

2016 Holiday Shipping
Wed 16 Nov 2016 - Filed under: Not a Journal., holiday, housekeeping, post office, shipping, shopping, usps| Posted by: Gavin
Updated from last year, here it is again:
This is our annual post about holiday mail dates: like the zombies, they’ll be here slightly faster than expected. As usual, our office will be closed over the holidays, this year that’s from December 24 – January 3, 2016. It is unlikely we will ship over that period. (Weightless is always open.)
Here are the last order dates for Small Beer Press — which, in case you’re thinking about waiting until the last minute to order some chocolate Christmas trees are about the same as every other biz in the USA. Dates for international shipping are here.
All orders include free first class (LCRW) or media mail (books) shipping in the USA.
But: Media Mail parcels are the last to go on trucks. If the truck is full, Media Mail does not go out until the next truck. And if that one’s full, too, . . . you get the idea. So, if you’d like to guarantee pre-holiday arrival, please add Priority Mail:
Domestic Mail Class/Product | Cut Off Date |
---|---|
First Class Mail | Dec-20 |
Priority Mail | Dec-21 |
Priority Mail Express | Dec-23 |
Just like to read a book, don’t care about a ding or two?

Dizzy
Tue 23 Dec 2014 - Filed under: Not a Journal., chuntering on, music, shipping, Sofia Samatar, Throwing Muses| Posted by: Gavin
This morning brought to you by the sun which refuses to shine. Perhaps it is annoyed about the arrow I shot it down with the other day. I apologized and explained I was worried it would go away forever and we’d end up in a very boring (and short) dystopic future. The sun said it was not down with that and after chatting with the moon it promised to spin things up a bit and add a few minutes back to each day. At this point the whole southern hemisphere of the planet said, “Oi!” and I hid behind some boxes of books until they went away.
This morning also brought to you by the second printing of Sofia Samatar’s A Stranger in Olondria which arrived in the office and in the warehouse this week. At last and yay!
This morning is also brought to you by the Throwing Muses’s Hunkpapa (there are 4 comments on that page [where I think you can listen to the whole album!]: 1 offer to help with response, 1 comment, and 1 demand, which is a tiny look in at how people’s expectations and demands on performers have changed. Expectations: so high! Politeness, where did you go?). Anyway, Hunkpapa which was the only Muses I could find this morning in the office. Luckily I have a cassette player here(!). I think I have it because of the single “Dizzy” and also the year 1989. I’ve been reading Kristin Hersh‘s memoir Rat Girl which is pretty fantastic. It’s a real reminder that a writer (and a book) can have a voice unlike any other. There are sentences in there that read/sound like nothing I’ve read. The call out one-to-three line excerpts from the lyrics to her songs add a refractive perspective to the events. I’m almost done with the book and at that stage where I don’t want to be finished it — this is where series fiction/nonfiction wins! — but there’s no further memoirs, yet, so I’ll just have to stick it back on the shelf and re-read it sometime.
This morning also brought to you by a day where we’ve caught up on shipping again (yay! — just a couple of orders that came in after I left the office yesterday), a day in which we’ve reduced the submissions to a near-manageable 2-foot stack with plans for reducing even that, and the very, very cheery news that there is some solid forward movement on our our John Crowley project. Yay!
Caught up on shipping
Thu 18 Dec 2014 - Filed under: Not a Journal., sales, shipping| Posted by: Gavin
Friday morning update: Caught up again! usps.com says books shipped yesterday are scheduled to arrive Monday so you can still order today and fingers crossed they will arrive Tuesday!
Hey, we still have a couple of days — today and tomorrow — where the post office says that if you order from our site, since we’re upgrading all US book orders to Priority Mail, the books should arrive by December 24th. It’s been pretty great fun in the last week piling up the books and shipping them all out. The post office has been really busy!
Also: don’t miss these signed books:
A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar paperback:
Questionable Practices by Eileen Gunn
(We also did quite a few ebooks!)
Exit, Pursued by a Bear by Greer Gilman
Stranger Things Happen (and other books) by Kelly Link
& even some random older books (After the Apocalypse by Maureen F. McHugh, Howard Who? by Howard Waldrop, oh I don’t know!) all shipping free Priority (if only I could spell that) free until December 20th

International shipping
Wed 27 Feb 2013 - Filed under: Not a Journal., right?, shipping, they're kidding| Posted by: Gavin
Wow. We just caught up with the recent changes in international shipping costs. Basically the price of mailing one book outside the USA is now = Ouch. The cost of mailing 2 books = 4 x Ouch. Anything more than 2 books = Wow, wait, that really hurt!
Man, does this suck. First they got rid of M-Bag shipping and now it costs $23.95 to ship a book priority mail.
We’ll continue to ship books abroad—we’re very happy that readers from all over the world find Small Beer and LCRW—but, Ouch!—we won’t be surprised if you switch to ebooks instead.
2012 Holiday Shipping deadlines
Thu 1 Nov 2012 - Filed under: Not a Journal., holidays, post office, shipping, usps| Posted by: Gavin
Here are the last mailing dates before Christmas/your holiday of choice from the US Post Office.
Media Mail shipping is included in all our prices and Priority Mail can be added.
Remember that all mail slows down at the holidays. Media Mail packages are only included by the post office if and when there is space so they can languish for days during the holidays. If you are ordering after December 1st, 2012, and you would like your books to arrive for Christmas we recommend choosing Priority Mail.
You can also buy Gift Certificates to Small Beer or Weightless.

UPDATED: Please note we will not shipping books from our office until December 30. (Ebooks always available? Mais oui!)
In the meantime, one of our lovely local bookstores, Broadside, has all our books in stock and we very much encourage you to shop there!
The post office reminds us that the end of year celebrations are approaching. The sun is sinking in the northern hemisphere and we must eat, drink, and be merry for if we are bury ourselves deep in winter’s cold the sun may leave and never come back.
So set off some firecrackers, dig up the turnips, unleash the sun captured in the corn, the wine, the spirits, and have at the winter until it cracks wide open and spring comes charging in.
Should your winter fancy turn to books, please note we do not guarantee holiday shipping after these post office-provided dates. (Apart from ebooks.)
